Response to questionnaire:

I created a questionnaire to find out peoples favourite genre's and other things they like and dislike about film trailers, and I asked 10 different people male and female to see what their different responses were. The people I asked were around the ages of 17-25, but I did ask two people who were over the age of 25 to gain different perspectives on film trailers.

I found that when asking the favourite genre's of films most people circled romcom and horror, and only one person circled other, and said sport. I believe this is because nowadays films are quite hybrid and mix genre, but the most prominent of films released now are comedy and romcom, and recently thrillers and horrors are mixing as well, therefore making it hard to identify different genres, and I also think they also circled these as romcom and horrors are probably some of the most famous genres of trailers, and people always recognise the genres, but I then asked what genres amke the best trailers, and most said horrors and thrillers, and this is because they are designed to create suspense and excite the audience, and therefore they include lots of exciting scenes, and editing such as jump cuts, what enthrall the audience.
I also asked what was their favourite thing about romcoms and I found many people said that they enjoy the characters, as they're usually funny and accessible, and they also said that they like the stories, as they are usually quite exaggerated, and different from real life, making it like an escape for them to watch a romcom. The also said they like the clips in trailers, as they make the film seem quite interesting and funny, as they're the best clips of the film.
Also as I am making a film trailer I asked the respondents what they think is good about film trailers, and they all said that obviously they're good as they sell the film and advertises it, but it also gets the audience interested and attracts the audience, what is the main purpose of all film trailers, and will be the main purpose of my film trailer.

I also asked about the soundtrack for trailers, and asked if they feel it is important, and most said yes, and I also asked which type of music they prefer on a film trailer, and most said upbeat, and I would say this as well because we all react better to upbeat music, as it makes us feel better, whereas sombre music makes us usually feel quite sad, and therefore can sometimes turn people away from a film.
I also asked what people feel makes a good trailer, as I could incorporate there ideas into my trailer to make it more appealing, and I found that everyone said the characters are very important, and they should be accessible, but they also said a good outline of the film makes a good trailer, as that is what attracts them to the film, so therefore I am now going to make the outline of my film much clearer, as it may help appeal to a wider range of audience.

Target audience:
A target audience is a group of people a product is aimed at. The target audience can be aimed at gender or social class, age and occupation. he target audience is specific to each product, such as Action films are aimed at men from around the ages of 20-40, and are often aimed at young males.

The target audience for most romcoms are women, and they're usually aimed at women around the age of 20-45, as they have had life experiences and can understand and relate to what the characters are going through, whereas people who are younger have not had many life experiences will not be able to relate to the character.
I have decided that my target audience for my romcom trailer will be aimed at women, but from the ages of 18-30, and this is because I want to bring a younger demographic into the film, and I feel as it is aimed at young females it may increase the range of my audience, as younger females will be able to relate to the characters, as usually the stories in romcoms are quite mature, and usually aimed at career women. I have also decided to have this audience range as the actors in my romcom are both young, I have a young woman who will play the lead role, and she is 20, and the man is 22, and as they're this age younger people can relate, but the story of the trailer is quite mature, therefore appealing to the older women. The range is also quite a small range as I believe it makes it easier to aim your product to a small age range rather than a big one, because if I created a trailer for women around the ages of 15-50, it is too big as 15 and 50 year olds are completely opposite, they have been brought up in different times, and therefore have different culture references, and the 50 year olds have been through many life experiences, whereas 15 year olds haven't been through many, and they will not be able to relate to each other as they're completely different.

Demographics:
This is a type of audience research, and it defines the adult population by their occupation, and it is broken down into six different groups.

A Higher management, bankers, lawyers, doctors and other professionals.
B Middle management, teachers, creative and media people e.g. graphic designers.
C1 Office supervisors, junior managers, nurses, specialist clerical staff - white collar.
C2 Skilled manual workers, plumbers, builders - blue collar.
D Semi-skilled and unskilled manual workers.
E Unemployed, students, pensioners, casual workers.

Psychographics:
This describes the audience by looking at their behaviour and personality traits, the psychographics label a particular type of person, and describes their views and spending.

Mainstreamers - Seek Security, domestic, conventional, favour value for money family brands, nearly always the largest groups.

Aspirers - Seek Status, materialistic, orientated to image and appearance, persona and fashion. Typically younger people, clerical sales jobs.

Succeeders - Seek Control, strong goals, confidence, work ethic and organisation. typically higher management and professionals.

Resigned - Seeks Survival, rigid and authoritarian, interested in past and tradition. Typically older people.

Explorers - Seeks Discovery, energy and experience, values difference and adventure, first to try new brands. Younger demographic-students.

Strugglers - Seeks Escape, alienated and disorganised, few resources beyond physical skills, buys alcohol, junk food, lottery tickets, D and E demographic.

Reformers - Seeks Enlightenment, freedom of restriction and personal growth, anti-materialistic, has attended higher education and selects products for quality.

Most romcoms are aimed at the aspirers and succeeders groups, as they are usually aimed at career women, which represents the succeeders group, and women who are into the good things in life and fashion and fun, which represents the aspirers group, and I am also aiming at these people. but I am also aiming at younger females who are in the explorers group, and the E demographic, and this is going against the conventions of romcoms as they're usually aimed at the A and B demographic.
Audience research:

Abraham Maslow came up with a theory that we all have different layers of needs, and we have to achieve certain needs before we go on to the next level. This is his hierarchy of needs;

This shows us how the upper levels are about self esteem, and it shows us how if you buy the new coat of the right brand on the advert you will feel better about yourself, and it will improve your self esteem, therefore this hierarchy of needs is very relevant to advertisers and institutions.

Different audiences:

Action Films: This genre of film usually have high impact on the audience, as they usually have continuous energy, and explosive scenes. In the film there is usually one main protagonist, and it is usually a man, and a woman in the film is usually a romantic interest to the main protagonist. The target audience for action films are usually from the age of 16-40, and I think the films are usually aimed at men more than women, as men enjoy action films more than women, and this is reflected in the characters and there roles in the film, as the man is usually the main protagonist, as the men can relate to him, and there is usually a woman in the film so the women in the audience can relate to her, but the woman is not usually the main protagonist, but this has changed over the years as our society as changed. As now women are seen as more independent, and less vulnerable there are now more women as the main protagonist in Action films, such as Angelina Jolie as Lara Croft. Lara Croft is a famous actor star, and because of this character women are much more prominent in Action films, and there are now a lot more female heroines, and this therefore increases the range of the target audience, as there are more females watching Action films now, as there are more female Action stars.

Horror Films: This genre of film features jump scenes to scare the audience, and its aim is to instill fear or disgust into its audience. I have found that the target audience is usually young adults, from around the age of 18-25, but also older adults watch the films aswell. I have also found that a lot of horror films target teenagers, as they're usually the people who watch films, but horror films are also targeting teenage girls a lot, as they sometimes mix genres in horrors, they sometimes have some sort of relationship drama in it, which therefore attracts women, but also in many horror films the protagonist is a young girl, or several young girls, and this attracts the young girls to the film, as they can relate and put themselves in the characters shoes, this is seen in films such as
'When a stranger calls' and 'Sorority Row', as these films have female protagonists, but also horrors are aimed at young males, such as 'Silence of the lambs' and 'No country for old men', they are rated R and are probably aimed at young males. There are also and crime thrillers such as 'se7en', that target a more mature audience, but I have found during my research of horror films that the target audience for most horrors is young adults.

Comedy Films: This genre focuses on humour and entertaining the audience, and usually have a happy ending, except for the exception of Black comedy. Many stars who have starred in comedy films have become well respected and can be seen in serious genres of films as well as comedy. I believe that the target audience for comedy films are usually young adults from around the age of 15-30, as there is comedy films with younger adults such as '
Juno' and 'Superbad', and these attract the younger audiences, and then there are comedies for the older audiences, and these include couples and marriages such as 'Couples retreat' and 'Knocked up', these are aimed at older audience as they can relate to the story of the film whereas younger people can't as they haven't had the experiences the characters have had yet. The films are usually aimed at both men and women as there are usually two protagonists in the film, a male and a female. Comedies feature things that can be seen in our society such as problems in relationships, but they massively exaggerate it to create humour.

Family films: This genre of film is designed to attract families usually with children, the children are usually younger and therefore have stories and characters that attract them. The films usually have some sort of story that children will like and what will appeal to them, and there is also some wittier jokes and references to pop culture for the adults with their children. There are many family films made every year, and they have a studio designed to create them Walt Disney, which has created many films such as
'Toy story', which is one of the most famous family films. The characters are children's toys, which therefore appeals to the children as they may have the toys, and also it is a good way of selling products, as after 'Toy story' was released, they released toys which were in the film and as the film was so popular they sold out straight away, and this brought a lot of revenue to the film and the studio that produced and created it. Family films are usually aimed at young people and recently I have found that a lot of family films are animations such as 'Ice Age' and 'Monsters vs Aliens', these appeal to the children as they watch cartoons, and enjoy the fantasy world. The age family films aim at is from around the age of 5-11.

I have researched the audiences for these genre's of film, as I can incorporate this into my romcom trailer, as I believe understanding the audiences for these genre's will help me improve my final product, as I can use what I found out whilst researching these genre's and put it into my final product, and also it helps me to understand the different genre's and the different audiences for each genre's.

Textual Analysis:
For my A2 project I have decided to create a romcom film trailers; as I find them to be the most interesting, and I have decided to research four trailers. The fourth trailer I am researching is 'Bridget Jones diary'.

Plot summary: Bridget Jones is an average woman in her 30's looking for Mr Right. She has many flaws; she smokes, she drinks, struggles with her weight and her job, and decides to control her life by keeping a diary; and to always tell the complete truth in it. Daniel Cleaver her boss starts flirting with her, and she begins an affair with him, but she also meets Mark Darcy, who is at first rude to her, but then begins to fall for her. Bridget has to choose which direction to go in, and which man to choose.

Media Representations: The first thing we see on the trailer is a woman walking with a smile on her face; she is walking with her head held high signifying pride, but we don't know the reason for this. As this clip is on the voice-over man says 'In every life there comes a time to turn the page', and then we go to the next clip of a bin and we see the woman throwing vodka, cigarettes and a book called 'What men want' in the bin. This image reinforces the voice-over man saying she is turning her life around; and we the audience can now understand why she was walking proudly; because she is happy she is now changing and in control of her life. Bridget is also being portrayed as a stereotypical 30 something lonely single woman, as she drinks alone on a night, gets drunk; and we her singing very badly at a work do, and the book on 'What men want' reinforces that image. In the next clip we see her putting on big pants that suck your fat in; again this is stereotypical as 'control pants' are aimed at women around Bridget's age, and it is stereotypical of 30 something women trying to lose weight and stay young. We also see her at the gym which again conveys to the audience that she is turning the page and trying to change her life, although we do see her eating chocolate spread out of a jar; which again is stereotypical as it brings to mind the image of a 30 something single woman sat at home eating ice-cream for a tub. We also see Daniel Cleaver; Bridget's boss, we meet him when he is stood in a lift with quite a smug smile on his face. The smart shirt, smart styled hair, smile and also with his top button open, it conveys to the audience that he is flashy and a bit of a womaniser, this immediately creates sympathy for Bridget; and creates a connection with Bridget and the audience; as we can see that he isn't good for her. We also meet Mark Darcy in the trailer. When we first meet him he is wearing a frown on his face as if he is looking down on someone, and he is also wearing smart clothes, and a smart shirt; showing he has a bit of money, but then the next clip is of the people he is with and they have very posh accents and are wearing expensive clothes, this portrays that Mark is posh and does have a bit of money. Mark is stood with a few people and one of the women he is with says 'bizarre what some men find attractive' and it is clear she is talking about Bridget; and this conveys that they're very snobby and are looking down on Bridget, again this causes the audience to have sympathy with Bridget; which therefore makes them want to go and see the film.

Media language and forms: There are many different locations in the trailer, but the first time we see Bridget we see her walking on a bridge in London. We all think of London as been a very chaotic city, and everyone there is all about their career, and this represents the target audience of career women. We also see her in her home, which is a way of making the audience connect with her as they can see into her life, and see how she behaves when she is in her own home, it also makes the character much more approachable than just been seen in an office. Bridget's home is very average and like everyone else's, which again helps the audience relate to her, because if she lived in a big mansion the audience wouldn't be able to think of her as their friend, and would most likely see her as being quite snobby. We also see Daniel Cleaver's apartment, and it is big, expensive, and quite flash representing his character, and it conveys him to be a bit of a playboy, and it is almost a foreboding to the audience that he is not good for Bridget. The office is also shown in the trailer, and this is because the film is aimed at women in careers, and most of them work in an office, therefore it also adds to the verisimilitude. The facial expressions also convey Bridget's feelings to the audience, as when she is with Daniel Cleaver she is giggling, and having fun, and this represents that although he is making her happy, he is not serious and sees her as just a bit of fun. This is the opposite to when we see her with mark Darcy, as she always has quite serious expressions when around him, representing how he is serious about her, and wants a real relationship. The music is quite upbeat and fun at the beginning, and it almost reminds me of a gameshow, like this is a game is she going to be successful in turning her life around, and the voice over reinforces this aswell. At the end of the trailer we see Bridget singing 'I can't live without you' drunk and very badly, this represents her being single, but it is almost like it is mocking the single 30 something women. The mise-en-scene is quite sterotypical of love and the different men and relationships, and therefore it attracts the audience.

Narrative: The narrative is the story of a woman and her life. The narrative is she falls for her boss and they start a relationship, and she also meets another man and during the course of the film falls in love with him, and therefore has to choose between the two men, and the narrative follows her choice and how it affects her life. The narrative follows the theory of Tzvetan Todorov, were there is a point of stable equilibrium, as in the trailer Bridget is quite focused and is attempting to change her life, and is quite stable, and then we meet Daniel Cleaver and we can see in the trailer that she is content and happy, and then we meet Mark Darcy and we can see in the trailer that her equilibrium is disrupted as she likes both men, and therefore has to choose, and the trailer creates an enigma, as we do not know if the equilibrium is reestablished, as the trailer has to keep a sense of intrigue and mystery to entice the audience. The narrative also follows the basic theory of O'Sullivan who said that there is a common structure which starts with the establishment of plot or theme, this is then followed by a problem; an enigma, and then resolution, and in my research I have found this to be quite common with romcoms. As romcom narratives are usually about a couple, a male protagonist and a female protagonist, or sometimes a love triangle, and there is some disruption to the equilibrium, and at the end it is resolved. I found this in many of the trailers I researched, and I have found that this is a convention of romcoms. The narrative is created specific to the audience, as the narrative is a love triangle, and the main protagonist is a female you can see from the trailer that the target audience is females, which again is another convention. In the narrative Bridget is portrayed as a bubbly woman as we see her singing on a karaoke machine drunk at the office party, and therefore the audience can relate to her as she is fun and also quite vulnerable. The narrative portrays Daniel to be quite a womaniser, as he is very flashy and smug, and therefore it makes him somewhat of a villain in the narrative, but the narrative also makes Mark Darcy quite likeable, as he does say to Bridget he likes her just the way she is, which therefore makes the audience want Bridget to be with him, and also attracts the audience as they want to know who she will choose. The editing follows conventions of most trailers, as the clips in the trailer are not in the order they appear in the film, but they convey the narrative best and are the most exciting clips, the editing of this one is a montage and shows different things in Bridget's life, and this is to help the audience connect to Bridget as they can see what her life is like, and it therefore makes them want to see it. The music also reinforces the narrative, as the music at the beginning is very upbeat and the pace of the music matches the pace of the trailer and the changing of the clips, at the beginning the music almost mirrors and brings to mind a reality T.V show; as we are looking in on her life, and when she thinks about the Daniel Cleaver the music goes very soft, almost dreamlike reflecting her feelings of Daniel Cleaver to the audience. The major theme of the narrative is relationships and love, which is a common theme in most romcoms, and is a convention of most romcoms, in the trailer it shows the different relationships between Bridget and Mark, and Daniel, and this therefore adds to the verisimilitude, as the different relationships reflect the different relationships in society, and therefore the audience can relate to it more. The love triangle is also one of the eight narratives that Kate Domaille said every story can be fitted into, Bridget Jones fits into the Tristan and Iseult category; the love triangle. The narrative is also a point of view structure, as we see the film through Bridget's eyes. The narrative also incorporates Claude Levi Strauss' ideas about narrative, that they operate to certain binary opposites, and this trailer represents this in the different relationships, the bad relationship with Daniel Cleaver, and the good relationship with Mark Darcy.

Genre: The genre of the film trailer is romcom, and the majoric conventions of the trailer is the protagonist Bridget; as romcoms always have a protagonist maybe more than one, and it follows two people who initially get together; than split up due to circumstances; and then the two protagonists get together again. The love triangle between Bridget, Mark and Daniel follows this convention; and it is the love triangle that attracts the audience to the film. The major generic themes are obviously love and relationships, which is common in the conventions of romcoms, and the characters, as in the genre of romcoms the main protagonist is usually a woman so that the audience can relate and connect to the character. The character of Bridget is a generic convention as most females in romcoms are usually around her age of 30, and are often single looking for love, or in a troubled relationship, this is so the audience can relate to the story, and it also adds to the verisimilitude. The trailer does conform to the characteristics of the genre as they have a love story, problems with the relationship, and the character trying to resolve it, and the main protagonist is a woman; another convention. Also the people cast as the characters represent the genre, as Renee Zelwegger is known as being a romcom actress and has starred in films such as 'The Bachelor' and 'Miss Potter', which are films associated with this genre of film, and therefore the audience can recognise the film, and also Renee Zelwegger is 41, and is in the target age for the audiences of romcoms, and because of that the audience can relate to her and she is suitable for the role, as she has been through some of the experiences the audience has been through, and she is also approachable which is what you want for the lead in a romcom. Both Hugh Grant and Colin Firth are also associated with romcoms. Hugh Grant has starred in some of the most famous romcoms such as 'Notting Hill' and 'Four weddings and a funeral', and by using him it conveys to the audience that this is quite a fun, classic romcom, and also it attracts the target audience, as their age is around 30-50, and they will have seen these films when they first cam out and probably all had crushes on Hugh Grant, and because of this it attracts the audience as they all remember Hugh Grant. Colin Firth is another actor associated with romcoms as he has starred in possibly the most famous romcom 'Pride and Prejudice' and also 'Mamma Mia', he attracts the audience aswell as he is who the target audience probably had crushes on when he first became known, and he is also older and maturer which attracts the audience, also it conveys that this will become a very famous romcom and a classic one, and also the name of him in the film represents this, as he is called Mark Darcy, the name Darcy is known as being the perfect gentlemen and the man every woman wants, and as he was in 'Pride and Prejudice' it conveys to the audience that he is the perfect man for Bridget. The actors represent the genre of the film, and therefore attract the audience.

Media institutions: The film and trailer was produced and distributed by three companies Miramax, Studio Canal and Universal, which is probably one of the most well known and recognisable media companies. Miramax is a company that has produced and distributed many films, and it was bought by Walt Disney in 1993. Walt Disney is one of the most famous companies what has produced some of the most famous films such as 'Pirates of the Caribbean' and 'Toy Story', this is a big budget company that is very well known, and changed the face of Miramax when it acquired it, and Walt Disney has a very fun feel to it, and therefore that could have influenced Bridget Jones films, as they are quite funny. The film was also produced by Studio Canal which is again a production and distribution company, and owns the third largest film library in the world, and therefore is a very influential company. The company produced films such as 'Terminator 2: Judgement day' and 'Free Willy', and these are big blockbuster movies especially the terminator movies, and from that we can see that Bridget Jones was destined to be a major movie, as they produce very popular big budget films, and therefore we can see how Bridget Jones was influenced by them to become a major movie. The film was also produced by Universal one of the six major movie studios, and probably the most famous studio, it has produced films such as 'Jurassic Park', 'Hannibal', 'Jaws' and 'The mummy series', and hundreds of others. The films produced by Universal are usually big budget and very popular, and because of this Bridget Jones was big budget, and became such a popular series that it is recognisable in so many different countries. All the studios what produced and distributed this trailer and film have influenced the making of the film, and therefore made the film what it is today. The main purpose of the film is to sell it and bring in money to the companies, and hopefully make it one of the most remeberd films.

Media values and ideology: The romcom refers to the ideology of single 30 something women, and of different relationships and experiences you have during your 30 years. The trailer represents single women, and the bad boys you meet before you find the one, and what happens when you find Mr Right. The values of the trailer are love and relationships, as most romcoms have that value as well, and they usually have a women as the target audience can relate to her. The trailer represents the everyday women in Bridget, and the different men you meet in Daniel Cleaver and Mark Darcy. The trailer portrays Daniel Cleaver as the man who you would like to change but everything about him is wrong, and it portrays Mark Darcy as being the perfect man, Mr Right.

Media audiences: The target audience of romcoms is usually aimed at women; from young women to middle aged women, the target audience is women which is why romcoms are referred to as chick-flicks. The target audience for Bridget Jones is around the usual age for most romcoms; from around the ages of 25-50. It is aimed at older women because the main protagonist is a 30 something woman looking for Mr Right, and struggling with work, her weight and her job, therefore it is aimed for older women as young teenage girls will not be able to relate to the character as they don't have enough life experiences; and have not experienced what Bridget has, but older women from around the ages of 25 upwards will be able to relate and connect with Bridget. It is also possible to tell the target audience from the characteristics of Bridget; and the way she behaves, as she has characteristics of people from the ages of 25 upwards. She has books on men, and eats chocolate spread from a jar, and these are quite stereotypical traits of 30 something single women, she also has 'control pants' which again is stereotypical of women trying to lose weight and hold on to their youth; and going on fad diets. Bridget also dates Daniel Cleaver who is a womaniser, and a bad boy; again stereotypical of a 30 something woman looking for Mr Right and meeting Mr Wrong, also Daniel Cleaver is her boss and it is a stereotypical affair that everyone has heard off; secretary and her boss.

I have also looked at the length of the trailer, and it is 1.43 seconds, and I feel this is an appropriate length as it is enough to attract the audience to the film, but out of the four film trailers I have researched this is the shortest one, as the other three I have analysed are around 2.26 seconds, this maybe because the other three were released around the same time, and trailrs have bcome longer recently, and Bridget Jones was made in 2001, and this could be a reason for the length of the trailer.

Textual Analysis
For my A2 project of creating a film trailer, I have decided to research four film trailers; and the third one is 'Made of Honour'.

Plot summary: The film revolves around two friends Tom and Hannah. He is a serial dater, whereas Hannah is the opposite and wants to get married and start a family. When Hannah goes away on business to Scotland for six week, Tom realises how much he misses her and wants to change. Just as Tom realises he wants to settle down Hannah gets engaged, and she asks Tom to be her 'made of honour', he agrees just so he can attempt to stop the wedding and make her fall in love with him.

Media Representations: The first character we see is a male driving a convertible sports car down the streets of New York, with the top down wearing a smart shirt and sunglasses. This immediately gives the image of him being flashy, cocky and a bit of a womaniser. Also the background of New York reinforces that image as it conveys the image of him having money, and getting what he wants. Also the voice-over man reinforces the image as he says 'Tom has no problem getting girlfriends', and then we go to the next clip of him in a coffee shop getting the number of a young, blonde woman. The woman is blonde representing he is quite shallow and all about appearance, as the stereotype of blonde women is that they're very shallow, and a bit like Barbie, which adds to the image of him being shallow and vain, because of this he is also being represented as the stereotypical young bachelor; who just wants to have fun and date lots of young blondes. We then meet Hannah; who is represented as the opposite of him. We first see her wearing a smart, black dress; portraying her as a classy woman. She is also very nicely spoken, and has a smart brunette; which also represents sophistication and class. Also as she is portrayed in a very sensible way; it conveys to the image that she is very well grounded; and possibly looking to settle down and be serious, whereas Tom just wants to date different women. Both characters are portrayed as completely different people, but both are portrayed quite stereotypically. Tom is portrayed as the stereotypical bachelor, and Hannah is portrayed as a stereotypical business woman looking to find love.

Media languages and forms: The first location we see is Tom driving in the streets of New York, this is a famous city and is also quite romantic, and it represents the genre, and it is also somewhat of a convention as a lot of romcoms are set in New York, as it is also quite a fantasy, dreamy place aswell, and often romcoms do try to portray love as quite a fantasy. We also see Tom in a gym representing how he takes care of himself, and has pride in his appearance, again reinforcing our impression of him being a bit of a player, and a womaniser. We also see another wedding in the trailer, this is a convention of romcoms, and a wedding is usually featured in a romcom as it is the ultimate show of love. Ath the wedding Tom and Hannah aredancing together, we already know that they're just friends at this poitn, but this could also suggest that maybe their relationship will change during the film, and they will be dancing at their wedding. We also see Tom's home in the trailer. Tom is sat on his couch phoning Hannah, and we see in the background a tacky sign on the wall, this represents how he just buys things without regard, again showing him to be a bit of a show off. This trailer out of the four that I have researched conforms to the genre conventions most, as there are two protagonists a male and a female, and this is a convention of romcoms. The facial expressions of the characters help portray their feelings, as when we see Tom with the many women he dates he is very flirty and smiling, conveying that he just sees this women as a bit of fun and not serious, and when we see him when Hannah has gone away he is very sad and upset, and this conveys his feelings for her, and portrays that his feelings for her have changed and he now loves her romantically instead of as a friend. The music again is also stereotypical of the genre as like most romcoms it is upbeat and quite a happy song, representing the comedy element of the film.

Narrative: The narrative has its own diegesis, and the film is set in the diegesis. The usual narrative for romcoms consists of two protagonists; a a male and a female, and the film usually follows their relationship The trailer for this romcom follows a convention of narratives for romcoms, there is an initial equilibrium at the beginning of the film, and then the equilibrium is disrupted by some event and usually the two protagonists seperate due to this event, and then they get back together in most romcoms and reequilibrium is established, and this is the theory of Tzvetan Todorov who stated that this is the narrative for most films. We can see at the beginning of the trailer that there is a stable equilibrium, as we see Tom driving his car having a good time, and dating many different women, the narrative portraying him to be a bit of a womaniser, and we see Hannah his best friend also enjoying her life, and we see them going to places together and they're happy, but then the equilibrium is disrupted as Hannah goes to Scotland for work, this affects Tom as we see in the trailer he realises he loves her while she is away, and this follows conventions of romcom narratives as during the time the main protagonists are apart they realise they love each other, and the film follows this narrative. Although in most romcom narratives the protagonists are usuallyin a relationship but in this they are friends, so therefore it doesn't follow all the conventions of narratives, but when she comes back he tries to show Hannah his love for her and make her love him, and the trailer creates enigma as it doen't reveal the end of the film, which is a convention. The editing follows conventions of most film trailers as the clips in the trailer are not in the order they're shown in the film. The editing helps reinforce the narrative as it shows us how Tom begins to fall for Hannah, the montage of clips are the most exciting clips, and also help convey the characters to us, as the editing shows us Tom is a bit of a womaniser, and Hannah is a sensible, kind girl. Also in the narrative, there is a use of split screen, this is quite a dated thing to do now, and many trailers don't use this technique anymore. The split screen helps to convey him as a womaniser, because they use it to show four different girls he is dating, this technique helps the audience understand the character, and realise he is a serial dater.

Genre: The genre of the trailer is romcom, and it follows the conventions of romcoms as it has two main protagonists, a female and a male, although it doesn't follow generic conventions in that the lead is the male, and he is the first character we meet, as it is usually a female who is the lead, as the target audience are females therefore they can relate to the female lead and put themselves in her shoes. The male character is quite stereotypical of males in romcoms as he is a bit of a player, and they convey this by the way he dresses and the car he drives, also he chats up women in the coffee shop. The genre of romcoms usually show a relationship between the two protagonists and usually they're a couple, but again with this it goes against generic conventions as the Tom and Hannah are just friends and not together, but as its a romcom and they have to follow some conventions we know that their relationship will eventually deepen. There are also many iconographic features in the trailer; such as that it is set in New York, this is a romantic city and quite a lot of romcoms are set here or in other romantic cities, and therefore this follows that convention, but also in the clips we see Hannah and Tom walking in the park, and this is a very romantic thing to do and it is usually what couples do, and this represents the genre of the trailer, and also conveys to the audience that they do love each other. Tom and Hannah also stand on a bridge talking, and this again is a very romantic image; and almost cliche, which again represents the genre as many romcoms are slightly cliche in their portrayal of love and relationships. The major generic theme is love and relationships, but also we see Tom in the trailer realise he loves Hannah, and this is a convention as many romcoms include this in their trailer; someone fighting for the person they love. The music of the trailer also conforms to the genre as it starts of quite indie and about love, but then it gets more upbeat which is what I have found in most of the trailers I have researched. The actors also portrayed in the film are representative of the genre as Patrick Dempsey who plays Tom has been in quite a few romcoms such as 'Enchanted' and 'Valentine's day', he is also in Grey's anatomy, and is seen as quite a hearthrob in that so therefore it makes him appropriate for the film, as by casting him it makes the audience recognise the genre, but it also appeals to the auience as he is around the age of the target audience's age, and therefore the audience can relate to him more than a younger actor. Michelle Monaghan who played Hannah has also been in romcoms such as 'The Heartbreak kid', and therefore she is suitable for the genre, and again she is the same age as the target audience's age; and therefore the audience can put themselves in her shoes, as she has had more life experiences and probably similiar experiences to the target audience than a younger actress has.

Media Institutions: The film trailer and film was produced by Columbia pictures and Original film. Columbia pictures is a very famous company and is probably one of the most well known, as everyone recognises the image representing the company on trailers, the lady holding a torch and draped in the American flag, representing that it is an American company. It is one of the companies in the big six, and is owned by its parent company Sony one of the biggest companies in the world. The company has produced many romcoms such as 'Little women' and 'Erin Brokovich', but it has also produced many other different types of genre such as 'The Shawshank redemption' and others showing that it has produced classic movies that are still known today, it has also produced many recent films such as 'Spider man' and 'Terminator 3', and it also produced 'The Holiday' a trailer I am researching, all these films show just how big an influence the company has, and as Columbia produced it you can see that it would be quite big budget and become famous like the other films the company has produced. Original films is an independent film company and is not part of the big four, it has helped produce films such as 'Click' and 'I am legend', as it is a smaller company I think it reaches out to different audiences as it is smaller and much more personal, which I think helps bring in a wider range of audiences. Both companies helped influence the trailer and film, but by having Columbia distribute it it makes it much more famous and popular, as that is a worldwide company.

Media Values and Ideology: The ideology of the film I think is about friends becoming more than friends and starting a relationship, and taming womaniser, it also represents the ideology of love. The film represents how womanisers when meeting the right woman can change and become serious, and I believe it is portraying this in a ver ideal light, almost like this is the way to start a relationship, being friends first. It also represents the ideology of love in the wedding featured, and Tom and Hannah walking in the park, which has romantic connotations and is almost cliche. The trailer represents the woman looking for Mr Right in Hannah, and the stereotypical man in Tom, a man afraid of commitment but realising he wants her when its to late.

Media Audiences: The typical audience for romcoms are women, around the ages of 25-50, but this romcoms is different to others in that the first character we meet in the trailer is a man, and he is the main protagonist in the film, and therefore because of this it has a different target audience to other romcoms, as this is also aimed at men aswell as women. The film is also aimed at male and females who are friends and not romantically involved, as the main narrative is about the friendship between Tom and Hannah. We can also identify the audience through the characteristics of the characters, Tom is a bachelor and likes to play the field, and this is stereotypical of most men in their late twenties and early thirties, and therefore they can relate to the character and it may make them go and see the film. Hannah is also representative of the audience, as she has a career, is smart and sophisticated, and she represents who the film is aimed at. The target audience influences everything about the film, and the characters are designed specifically with the audience in mind.

The length of this trailer is 2.26, and this is seen in many trailers such as the ones I have analysed, and this is because it conveys the story, and I am aiming for my trailer to be around this length.

Textual Analysis:
For my A2 project of creating a film trailer, I have decided to research four film trailers. The second one I have decided to research is 'He's just not that into you'.

Plot summary: The plot follows the lives of several people; five women and four men all struggling with love, we meet Gigi Haim who is very needy and desperate for a man, she goes on a date with a man called Connor and he promises to call her back, when he doesn't call she goes to the bar where he regularly goes, but she meets Alex and strikes up a friendship with him, and begrudgingly takes his advice on men and dating. Janine and Ben seem happily married, but then he meets Anna a yoga instructor and begins a flirtatious friendship with her; that then leads to an affair. Neil and Jen have been together for seven years, but when Jen realises he doesn't want to marry they break up. Mary is looking for love and begins online dating eventually meeting Connor and dating him.

Media representations: The first character in the trailer we meet is a little girl playing in a sand pit; when a little boy comes over and pushes her over saying she smells. We then see the girl talking to her mum; and her mother is saying that when a little boy likes a little girl they act mean to hide that they like them. This is stereotypical of little boys as we all know little boys act mean when they like a girl. We then hear the voice-over woman saying 'This is the beginning of our problem as we are all programmed to believe when a boy likes you he acts like a jerk', and this relates to the target audience as we have all been told this by our mothers. The voice over also conveys subtly that this is what the film is going to be about, men acting like jerks to women, and the women trying to cope with it. We then meet the woman who is the voice-over on a date and he is walking her home, and they seem like they had a good time, but then we see her sat at a desk at work calling him with her friend there saying 'I haven't heard from you in a while', and this reinforces what the voice-over says but it also enables the audience to relate to her and grow to like her, as most women have been on a date and the man has not called back. She is also reading of a pad, which was clearly written before she called him, and this is stereotypical of 30 something women desperate for Mr Right, and this woman represents the traditional single woman going on dates, whereas the next woman represents the modern woman, as she says this man 'myspaced' her. This reflects our society as we all now go on the Internet and have social networking sites, and this character represents the people who are like this, and therefore reaching out to a wider range of audience. She is also dressed quite laid back and fun, and this is also stereotypical of people who date on the Internet. We then meet another woman who is living with her partner but they're not married, and she says to him 'I don't want you to be nice unless your going to marry me', this character is stereotypical of the women who want to get married to their partner, their quite desperate to get married and it takes up their life so they bring it in to every conversation, and this character represents these women, and therefore they can relate to her, and her need to get her boyfriend to commit. We also see again the woman who we met first sitting by several different telephones clearly waiting for a man to call, this again is stereotypical of women waiting by the phone, so they can identify with her. We also meet two other women the wife and the mistress, this is a stereotypical love affair and represents the two opposite types of women, and therefore it reaches a wider range of audience. We also meet men in the trailer and therefore men can identify with the characters, as the men are all portrayed differently, single, playboy, has a partner, and married, therefore a wider range of people can relate. This is the same with the different female characters, as they all portray different types of relationships, which is common in our society today. As the trailer has many different ideas of love it can attract many different audiences, which therefore brings in more revenue to the film.

Media languages and forms: There are many locations in the trailer, the first one is a park were the little boy and girl are playing, the park has fun connotations but it also has romantic connotations, and in most romcoms there is often a park featured with a couple walking in it. We also see an office were Gigi is supposed to be working but is calling a man. In the romcoms I have researched I have found that there is usually an office were the main protagonist works, this is representative of the audience as most of the women in their 30's work in an office. We also see Beth's home which allows us to make a connection with her and it also represents her character, as its very smart and looks quite expensive, as she is a career woman the woman like her can relate to her character. There is also a wedding featured in the trailer, this is representative of the genre, and is associated with romcoms. There is also two male characters on a boat, and this represents the audience the film is aimed at, people who are career people, and are smart and have life experiences, as people on the doll would not be able to relate to that. The facial expressions help us with understanding the different relationships and their feelings. When we see Beth and her partner hugging they have quite sad expressions, and this conveys to the audience that they're having problems with their relationship, and we also see Ben who is having an affair we see him putting his head in his hands when he is with his his lover, this conveys that maybe he is regretting his affair and realises its wrong. The music is also upbeat and quite fun, which is a convention for romcoms and therefore it attracts the audience.

Narrative: The narrative is the organising structure and as such has its own features and conventions; the narrative for this film is a multi-strand narrative, as there are several different narratives within the narrative. We see different couples and they each have their own narrative; within the main narrative. Multi-strand narrative is quite common in Rom-Coms and is seen in many romcoms such as 'Valentine's Day', and 'Love actually', this is because romcoms are usually based on love and romance; and therefore they have different narratives portraying different types of love and romance, this adds to the verisimilitude as there are different couples portraying different kinds of love. The narrative goes against the basic theory of most films, the theory by Tzvetan Todorov. I have found this theory to be quite common in the romcoms I have researched, and this trailer goes against the convention, and I think this is because this film is reflecting our society now, as nowadays there are many different types of relationships and different ideas of love, and by just having one idea of love it wouldn't be Representative of the time, and therefore would lack verisimilitude. In the narrative the different women are portrayed to attract a specific target audience, but the women we first meet Gigi Haim represents most women looking for love, which is why we meet her first as most women can relate to her. The narrative also encourages the audience on which characters to like, and we meet a man who is cheating behind his wives back, and because of this the audience takes an instant dislike to him. The editing again reinforces the narrative, and like most film trailers is a montage. The editing helps show us how desperate Gigi is for a boyfriend, as we first see her calling a man who hasn't called her back, and we meet a few characters in between the next time we see her, and then we see her again and she is sat by a phone, and the editing makes it look like she has been waiting for ages and the man still hasn't called, she has been waiting days and wont give up. The music helps reinforce the narrative and like most romcom trailers I have researched it is quite upbeat, and the song is about love. The music also gives with the different clips shown, but in the middle the music goes a bit slow and romantic when we see two characters hugging, this conveys to the audience that maybe they could be splitting up. The multi strand narrative is I think the best narrative, as it reflects our society and add to the verisimilitude of the trailer.

Genre: The genre is romcom and, the major conventions of the genre are the characters. The main protagonists are all female and all represent different types of love and relationships, but as there are several different protagonists it goes against the conventions of the genre as there is usually just two protagonists, a male and a female. The main characters are all representative of the genres as they're are all women around 30 years old, and are struggling with their ideas of love and are looking for Mr Right, which is usually the central premises for romcom movies. The characters cast in the film are all specifically chosen as they represent the genre best, and are approachable so the audience can feel something for the characters. Jennifer Anniston who plays Beth, the woman who's partner does not want to get married, is one of the most famous romcom actors and has starred in many such as 'The Break up', and 'Along came Polly', as she is so well know for starring in romcoms many people associate good romcoms with her, and therefore as she is in the film it may encourage her fans to see it. Also she starred in 'Friends' one of the most well known T.V shows ever made, and everyone fell in love with her because of that, and people still love her now so it may entice more people to watch the film because she is in it. Drew Barrymore played the woman who dates online, and she has been in many romcoms such as 'The Wedding singer' and 'Music and lyrics', and in that one she starred with Hugh Grant who's is most famous for romcoms. She is a very popular actress and by casting her it brings in more revenue to the film and increases the audience, as her fans may go see it because of her. The other actors casted in this film all represent the genre and therefore make it easier for the audience to identify the film.

Media Institutions: The film was produced and distributed by New line cinema. This is an American film company and is well known in America, but not as well known internationally, although it was merged with Warner Bros in 2008 which is one of the big six film companies. New line cinema co-produced the film with flower films which is an independent film company founded by Drew Barrymore, who stars in the film. The film was able to bring in a lot of acclaim for Flower films as it was a very popular film internationally. Flower films has only produced ten films, and several T.V shows, but it has produced 'Charlies Angels', which is known worldwide. New line cinema has produced many films such as 'my sisters Keeper', and 'Time travelers wife', these are famous films and therefore bring in more revenue to the institution. The main purpose of the institutions collaborating is to create a film loved worldwide, and therefore bring in lots of money to both companies, but also Flower Films produced this to bring in more acclaim to the company and to let the audience know about their company, therefore making the film studio much more recognised.

Media Values and Ideology: The ideology of the trailer is the same as every other romcom, the ideology is love and relationships, but I also think the ideology for this romcoms is our society and the changes, and the different relationships in our society today. This is shown in the multi-strand narrative, and the different relationships the single women, the married woman, the online dater, these are all representative of our society today, as 50 years ago there was really only one type of relationship, a married couple. The ideology reflects the changes and how different it is now as we can go online to meet people now. The values of the film are also the same as other romcoms, love and finding the right person, and the challenges and obstacles what come before you have your happy ending.

Media Audiences: The romcom is aimed at women, as they can connect with the characters. The target age of the audience for the film is about 20-50, it is this age as women this age can relate more to the characters as they have more experience with love then teenage girls do, and as the audience can relate to the characters it makes them want to go and see the film. The women characters are all different from each other and as there is several women characters it makes it much easier for the audience to connect to the characters; as the audience can relate to at least one character. Also as the characters are all different it adds to the verisimilitude of the trailer; as everyone is different and has different ideas of love and romance. The characters are all in the age range of the target audience, which makes it much easier for the audience to put themselves in their shoes, and each character has traits of the audience they're aimed at, such as the lover of the married man, she is blonde, pretty, and flirty, this is stereotypical of the blonde bimbo who most women assume are going to steal their partners, and this character appeals to the lovers of married men, but also in someway appeals to the wives, as they can understand the wives point of view.

The length of this trailer is 2.34, and this is the longest trailer I have analysed. The film has a multi-strand narrative, and therefore it is longer as we have to meet each character, and see what is going on in their love life.

Textual Analysis:
For my A2 project we were given a brief of creating a music video, film trailer or something else. I chose a film trailer; and I have chosen the genre of romcom as it is my favourite type of genre, as I find romcoms make the best film trailers. I have decided to research four film trailers, and the first film trailer I have decided to research is 'The Holiday'.

Plot summary: The film follows two women; Iris in England, and Amanda in America. Iris loves her boss and had a relationship with him but he is getting married; but he still uses her if he needs anything making it hard for Iris to get over him. In America Amanda has just dumped her cheating boyfriend, and wants to move on from him. Both women decide they need a holiday so Amanda goes on a house swapping website, and decides to swap her mansion with Iris cottage for a holiday. While in Iris's cottage in Surrey Amanda meets Graham; Iris's brother and falls in love with him. While in America Iris begins a friendship with Amanda's 90 year old next door neighbour; who helps her build up her self confidence. Iris also meet Miles a film composer; and falls in love with him.

Media representations: The first character we meet is a woman stood at a party watching a man. She is wearing a smart black dress and looks very sophisticated, suggesting she is classy and a career woman. We then hear her say 'oh lord here he comes' to her friend, as the man she has been watching starts to come over to her. As she is saying this she is drinking a glass of wine; but when he comes over she drinks it all straight away, suggesting she needs courage to be with him, conveying to the audience that there is some sort of relationship between them. The next clip we see her saying 'You're getting married' to him, she says this in quite a hurt, loud voice; signifying she feels something for him. We then go back to the party as her friend is saying 'he cheated on you', conveying to the audience there was a relationship and she still loves him. The woman Iris is portrayed as a typical dumped and lonely 30 something stereotype drinking wine to get over her broken relationship. We then meet the next character, a blonde woman stood on the balcony of a mansion asking her boyfriend if he slept with his secretary. The woman looks like the typical American woman; all blonde and white teeth. When her boyfriend admits he slept with his secretary she punches him twice, representing how she is a very strong and independent career minded woman; and the mansion she is in also reinforces that image. Amanda the American woman is contrasted with Iris, because whereas Amanda punches her boyfriend because he cheated; Iris gets over her broken relationship by pining after the man who cheated on her and drowning her sorrows in wine. The men who cheated on both women are also portrayed in the trailer, they are both portrayed as very smug, and smarmy which is stereotypical of men who cheat. We also meet two other male characters who both women start to fall for they are both in black coats and smartly dressed, and have nice smiles on their face, this conveys to the audience that these are nice trustworthy men. Graham played by Jude Law is quite young and good looking, and seems trendy and quite fun, which is similar to Amanda's character, as we first see her looking like the stereotypical American woman, and therefore it makes us think she is quite obsessed with appearance, which matches what we think of Graham, and therefore conveys to the audience that they will have some sort of relationship. We also meet Miles who is quite funny and unique, and not obsessed with appearance but more about people's feelings, and that matches Iris's character as she will do anything for her boss because she cares for him, and again this conveys to the audience that Iris and Miles are going to have a relationship. Both women are portrayed as opposites, and this adds to the verisimilitude as everyone's different and go through different relationships, and by having two protagonists it makes it easier for the audience to relate to one of the characters, and therefore this attracts the audience to the film.

Media Languages and Forms: The first location we see in the trailer is Iris' office, and this represents the career women who the film is aimed at, and it also helps the target audience relate to her, and it is also stereotypical of the audience as most of them have a career. We then see Amanda at her mansion standing on the balcony talking to her partner, this scene is mirroring the Romeo and Juliet scene were Juliet is pledging her love to Romeo, but here Amanda is breaking up with her partner, the mansion is representative of the high flying women who strive for the good things in life, the aspirers. The mansion also reflects Amanda's image as being the stereotypical American girl, blonde, pretty and successful, and as she is American and Iris is English it is representing international audiences and therefore increasing the range of audience. We also see Iris' house and this is very humble and what most houses are like, and this represents how she is a kind down to earth girl, and it reflects everyday life as the audience may be able to connect with her more than Amanda. In the trailer we see both of their houses and this helps us to really understand them and almost feel like we know them, as we can see into their personal lives and what they're going through. The expressions of the characters help convey their feelings, and guide the direct the audience on what characters to like and who not to. When we first see Iris she has a sad expression like she is longing for her boss, and she is downing her glass of wine, and this encourages the audience to not like her boss/boyfriend as he is causing her pain, whereas when she is with Miles she is happy and smiling, representing how he is good for her and they would be happy together. Amanda is the oppsite as instead of sad her facial expressions are quite angry, showing the difference in the two characters, but also her anger again encourages the audience to take an instant dislike to her partner, and when she meets Graham like Iris she is happy and quite silly, which conveys that he is right for her. Again like most romcoms it is quite an upbeat soundtrack representing how their lives will get better, but again I think the music is quite reminiscent of a gameshow which is also what I found in the trailer for 'Bridget Jones Diary'. The mise-en-scene is stereotypical of most romcoms, as the music is quite upbeat, and the caharcter are stereotypical of romcoms aswell.

Narrative: The Narrative goes against the convention of most romcom film trailers, as a convention for romcoms is that there is usually initial equilibrium, but in this film there is not, we start with both characters having problems with their relationships, Amanda's boyfriend cheating on her, and Iris's boyfriend/boss getting engaged to another woman. This immediately goes against the conventions, but also it adds to the verisimilitude of the trailer. Also there is two main female protagonists, which again goes against conventions as most romcoms usually have a male and female protagonist who are together and then split up, and then at the end get back together. We see the two characters begin to fall in love with different men, and the narrative portrays the different relationships between the two women, which again adds to the verisimilitude as there is more than one type of relationship. Graham and Miles, the men who Iris and Amanda fall for can be put into a character that the Russian theorist Vladimir Propp came up with, they're the (magical) helpers, as they help the two women recover from their break-ups, and help them love again. At the end of the trailer we can see that their equilibrium will be re-established, even though the trailer retains enigma to keep the audience interested, and this is a convention of most romcoms. Also like most romcoms it fits into the narrative types suggested by Kate Domaille, and like most romcoms it is the Romeo and Juliet narrative type, as they're usually based on a love story. The editing also conveys the narrative as it is a montage of different clips, which is a convention for film trailers, and this conveys the narrative but it also retains mystery. The editing of the trailer shows us how the two female protagonist manage to recover from their break-ups and fall in love again, and this also shows Graham and Miles in a good light as they're helping the women. The narrative is very effective in enticing the audience.

Genre: The genre of the trailer is romcom, and it is identifiable because of the love stories, and the different relationships, and also because of the female leads. The trailer does go against generic conventions by having to main female protagonists, but it does make the trailer much more interesting and could also attract a wider range of audience, as by having two different characters people may be able to relate to one more than the other, and if you had just one female lead, some of the audience may have found they could not relate to the character. The characters are again like most romcoms representative of the genre and the audience, as they're both 30 something women, have careers and are struggling with love, and it is a convention of romcoms as it is about love and relationships. The actresses in the film are very representative of the genre as Cameron Diaz who played Amanda has been in many romcoms, and probably one of the most famous ones 'There is something about Mary', this therefore makes it recognisable as a romcom, and also helps the audience connect to the character, as she is of the age of the target audience. Kate Winslet who plays Iris is also typical of the genre as she starred in one of the most famous films ever made, 'Titanic'. This film has probably the most famous love story ever between Kate Winslet and Leonardo DiCaprio, and because Kate Winslet played Rose the audience already have a connection with her as everyone has seen this film, and therefore it makes the film much more popular. Jude Law and Jack Black have both starred in many romcoms, and this helps make the story much more believable and adds to the verisimilitude, because if you had Arnold Schwarzenegger in a romcom it wouldn't be taken seriously, and he would not fit the stereotypical characters of romcoms.

Media Institutions: Columbia pictures and Universal pictures produced and distributed the film, and as these are two major companies part of the big six, it shows how this film had quite a big budget. These film companies are also international and because of this the film became international, therefore increasing the popularity of the film, which in turn increases the revenue from the film. Columbia distributed in the U.S and Universal distributed it internationally, and I think this is because Universal is much more recognisable and well known internationally as it has produced many famous films, including probably the most famous film ever 'E.T-the extra terrestrial', and Universal serves worldwide and is the second longest lived Hollywood studio behind Paramount Pictures. They're both massive companies and both influenced the film and trailer, and they have one thing in common, as the main purpose of the film is to sell it, and bring in lots of revenue and acclaim to both companies.

Media values and ideology: The ideology of the trailer is love and the different types of couples around nowadays, and to show the change in society, as 40 years ago a woman would not leave her partner, and it would be socially unacceptable to live with your partner without being married, and Amanda does this by living with her boyfriend until she finds out he cheated, and this reflects the change in our society. Like most romcoms the main theme and ideology of the trailer is love, and it is shown through many different relationships, most prominently through Amanda and Graham, and Iris and Miles, therefore adding to the verisimilitude. The trailer also like most romcoms refers to the ideology of 30 something women, and their life and troubles. The trailer portrays the opposite types of women in Amanda and Iris, Amanda not letting her partner walk over her and she kicks him out, whereas Iris takes it to heart and still helps her ex with what he needs. The values of the film are connecting with the audience and hopefully helping the audience put themselves in the characters shoes.

Media Audiences: The target audience for this romcom is women around the ages of 25-50, as they can understand the characters, and have probably experienced what the characters have, the women who the romcom is aimed at are also career women as both Amanda and Iris are career women, and represent most women around their age, as most women in their 30's have a career. This is also a convention of romcoms as most romcoms have a target audience of around that age, and the films are usually aimed at women. The characters also represent the target audience, as Amanda represents the high fliers, and has stereotypical traits of high flying, career-minded women, as she takes care of her appearance, wears nice clothes, has a big house, and is a perfectionist, and this is stereotypical of career minded women, and therefore her character appeals to these type of women. The character of Iris is stereotypical of women who are quite down to earth and humble, still have a career but they really want a family, and therefore her character appeals to this type of women. As the film has two opposite types of characters who represent different things, it therefore brings in a wider range of audience to the film.

The length of this trailer is 2.29, and again this film has a multi-strand narrative with two characters, and like 'he's just not that into you' the trailer conveys the story of both characters, and therefore this is the reason for the length of the trailer.
